GSUTCM Brief Profile

 

Gansu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (GSUTCM), established in 1978, is a comprehensive institution dedicated to TCM education, research, and clinical practice. The university has a total of approximately 2,200 teaching, administrative, and medical staff, including 535 full-time faculty members. It comprises 14 secondary colleges—such as the College of Clinical Medicine, College of Pharmacy, and College of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine—and operates 2 directly affiliated hospitals, 6 indirectly affiliated hospitals, 47 teaching and internship hospitals, and 25 specialized internship bases.

 

GSUTCM currently offers 21 undergraduate programs, including 3 nationally recognized characteristic specialties. It has the authority to award doctoral degrees in 3 first-level disciplines and master’s degrees in 4 first-level disciplines, along with 2 professional degree training centers. The university emphasizes research on Gansu’s unique medicinal materials, classical TCM texts, regional diseases in western China, TCM-based prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, and the inheritance of clinical expertise from renowned practitioners.

The university hosts 5 key disciplines designated by the State Administration of TCM, 2 provincial key disciplines, 9 key disciplines in the Gansu health sector, and 14 high-quality provincial-level courses. It has established 25 multi-level research platforms, including the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for "Transfer of Dunhuang Medicine," the provincial "2011 Collaborative Innovation Center of Northwestern Traditional and Tibetan Medicine," and a State Administration of TCM key laboratory. The "Center for TCM Cultural Inheritance and Development" is recognized as a provincial key research base for humanities and social sciences and is included in the national demonstration zone for Chinese civilization inheritance. GSUTCM also serves as the technical support unit in Gansu for the Fourth National Survey of Chinese Medicine Resources and leads the provincial construction of seed and seedling breeding bases for essential Chinese medicinal herbs.

GSUTCM is authorized to enroll international students and has established cooperative agreements with institutions such as Sungshin Women’s University (Korea), Bogomolets National Medical University (Ukraine), and Moldovan National Medical University. It is actively advancing the establishment of the "Qihuang TCM College" in Ukraine. The university maintains international collaborations in 11 countries and regions, including the U.S., France, Korea, Ukraine, and Australia, enhancing its global academic presence.

The university has developed a discipline system centered on TCM, Chinese Materia Medica, and integrated Chinese-Western medicine, supported by preclinical and clinical medicine. It focuses on undergraduate education while expanding postgraduate and international student programs, complemented by adult and continuing education.
